The wave metaphor is surely overused in the world of High Tech from which I retired. The “next big thing” is not the wave in front of you. If that wave is breaking, it is too late to ride it. It is the small wave, forming behind, that is the next big thing. And you can’t really tell whether the ripple you are on will turn into a big thing or not. Of course, you always tell the VCs it is sure to be the next big thing.

For this piece, I made the form of the wave using paper clay. Actually, I made several waves using paper clay with varying success… I learned about that material from Flo Bartlett’s video – part of the online masterclass series Painting With Fire – Vol 5.
The rocks embedded in the work are stones from the coast of Maine. I collected them during Dielind Vander-Schaaf‘s annual Maine Coast Encaustic Retreat.
