Labyrinth 1

This piece uses the design of the labyrinth in the Chartres cathedral. I made layers of wax: red, blue, and orange with some mottling of black. I did a pour of chromium oxide green on top. With compass and straight edge, I drew the labyrinth on tracing paper. With the tracing atop slightly softened wax, I used a clay tool to dent the labyrinth design into the wax. Then went about removing wax.

My original idea was to remove a V of wax revealing the layers beneath as stripes of color. It didn’t work. The underlying layers were thin and uneven. So I made the groove broader and smoother. I love the mottled effect that resulted.
