You might ask, “Hey! There are only four paintings. How do you get five elements?” The last element is ether and my notion is that it is invisible and surrounds the visible elements. So now I can claim to be a conceptual artist! 🙂
I had been playing with spirals in sketches when this set of pieces occurred to me. I had made Earth, Water, and Fire. My first attempt at Air was this:

I think it is a cool piece, but it doesn’t exactly say “Air.” For the final “Air Element” I used a very pale pan pastel background. Unlike Earth and Water, the wax atop the pastel layer does not cover the entire surface. I think that reduced density gives a more air-y feeling.
